Live Coaching and Cohorts: The Course Alternative That's Just a Booking Page

Not every course should be pre-recorded video. A live cohort, group coaching, or an office-hours program is a real alternative, and it doesn't need a course platform at all, just a real booking page.

By Vasanth Sriram

Recorded video is the default assumption behind “sell a course,” and it’s the wrong shape for a lot of what people are actually building: a live cohort that runs on a schedule, group coaching with real-time interaction, an office-hours program where the value is direct access to you. None of that needs a video-hosting platform, a drip schedule, or a student dashboard. It needs real availability someone can book, and a way to pay for it.

Why live beats recorded for some things

A recorded course scales infinitely and degrades the moment a student has a question the video can’t answer. A live cohort or coaching program does the opposite. It caps at whatever group size still lets you actually engage, and it answers exactly the question someone has, when they have it. Neither is strictly better; they’re different products, and a live one doesn’t need any of the infrastructure a recorded one does.

Setting it up as a booking, not a course

A cohort or coaching program is a booking offering: one with a longer duration, or one that repeats on a schedule, rather than a one-off consult. It can run through your own connected Stripe account, be free for a taster session, or display-priced if you’d rather invoice separately. Get paid your way covers the three modes, all of which apply to a booking exactly the way they do to a product.

A pack of sessions, not a single booking

A cohort or coaching relationship is rarely one appointment. It’s a set of sessions over weeks or months. The pattern that works: sell the whole program as a product (“8-week cohort,” “6 coaching sessions”) priced once through Stripe, then let the buyer book their individual sessions against it as they come up, rather than trying to force an ongoing relationship into a single bookable slot. A booking page for coaches and consultants covers this same pattern for 1:1 work, a cohort is the group version of it.

Intake before the cohort starts

A short form block next to your cohort offering (goals, current level, what someone’s hoping to get out of it) gives you real applicant information before the cohort fills, and lets you spot whether someone’s actually a fit before they’ve paid, if that matters for how you run it.

A free session as the on-ramp

The same free-to-paid pattern that works for a recorded course works here: a free intro session or a single taster class, captured with Free pricing, gives someone a lower-commitment way in before they commit to the full program. A booking page for coaches and consultants covers leading with a free discovery call in more detail.

Combining with recorded content

None of this rules out having some recorded material too: a cohort with a handful of pre-recorded lessons alongside the live sessions is common, and that content can be delivered the same way any digital product’s delivery link works: a private link included with the purchase, no separate video platform required just to hand someone a few recordings.

Where to start

Set up the program as a product with a delivery-free description of what’s included, and a booking offering for the actual sessions. Claim your page, connect Stripe, and add a short intake form: free to start, bookings included on the free plan.
