Academic website template

A free academic website template for a researcher or lecturer, with a paragraph on your research, cards for your latest paper, a book chapter and your data and code, and one for teaching. Put in your own work, then add office hours that students book themselves.

At the top sits your name with your title, a round photo and a line on your field, with LinkedIn, X and YouTube underneath, then a paragraph on what your lab works on. The page is deep burgundy with pale rose outlines, light text and square corners.

What’s on this page

  • Latest paper

Up to five photos with a title and a line of text. A card can show your work, an item for sale with a link to buy it, a product you recommend, or a code to copy.

Use the latest paper card for whatever you most want people to read now. Give the paper's title or a plain version of it, and a line on what you found, like how street trees affect bird movement across four cities. Add a button to the published version or the preprint.

  • Book chapter

Up to five photos with a title and a line of text. A card can show your work, an item for sale with a link to buy it, a product you recommend, or a code to copy.

A book chapter or a piece for a general reader reaches people outside your field, including journalists and councils. Say who it is written for and link to where it can be read or bought.

  • Data and code

Up to five photos with a title and a line of text. A card can show your work, an item for sale with a link to buy it, a product you recommend, or a code to copy.

If you share datasets and code, say so on a card of its own and link to the repository. Other researchers looking to reuse your work go straight to it.

  • Lectures and seminars

Up to five photos with a title and a line of text. A card can show your work, an item for sale with a link to buy it, a product you recommend, or a code to copy.

List what you teach, by level, like undergraduate ecology and a masters module on urban design. Prospective students and supervisees check this before writing to you, so a line on the topics you supervise is worth adding.

Add to it

  • Office hours

Appointments from your weekly hours, or stays by the night. Visitors pick a time and book on the page, and can pay through your own Stripe account.

Students can book a slot from your page, the way they would on a sheet pinned to your door. Set the hours you keep each week and the length of a slot, write your room in the location line and leave the booking free. Connect Google Calendar so slots during your lectures and meetings are not offered.

  • Publications

A piece of writing, like a guide or a list, that opens to be read in full with its own photos and items.

Keep your full publication list as an article, one item per paper with the authors and where it appeared, and make each title a link to the full text. Add new papers to the top as they come out, and the cards above can stay on your three highlights.

  • Download my CV

A web link, shown as a button or as a card with an image.

A button for your CV saves hiring panels and conference organisers from asking. Link it to the file wherever you keep it, and add other buttons the same way for your department profile or your lab's site.

Questions

What should an academic website include?

A plain summary of your research, your key publications, what you teach and supervise, and how to contact you or book time. This template has the research paragraph, three publication cards and a teaching card ready to fill in.

Can I list publications?

Yes. Use the cards for your highlights and an article for the full list, with each title linking to the paper.

Can students book office hours?

Yes. Add a booking block with your weekly hours and slot length, and students pick a free time on the page. With Google Calendar connected, times you are already busy are not offered.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes. Connect a domain you own and the page opens there, so the address on your email signature stays the same if you change institution.
