Beginner clinic

Ninety minutes, six people at most, on the softest beach break in town. We start on the sand with where to lie on the board and how to stand up without thinking about it, then spend most of the session in waist-deep water actually catching things. Board and wetsuit are included and I have every size from XS up. You do not need to be able to swim well, but you do need to be comfortable standing in water up to your chest.

Private coaching

One hour, just you and me, pitched at whatever is currently in your way. Most people book this because they can stand up but cannot turn, or because they have been surfing for years and want someone to tell them honestly what their back foot is doing. I film the second half on a waterproof handheld and we go through it on the sand afterwards, so you leave with something to look at rather than just a feeling.

What is in the van

Changing robe

€78

Changing robe

Heavy cotton towelling, cut long enough to reach below the knee so you can get a wetsuit off underneath it in a car park without performing for the whole street. One deep front pocket for keys and a phone. It is warm rather than waterproof, which is the point: it goes on wet and dries you while you drink your tea. Sand shakes straight out of it. Comes in the one colour because it is the only one that does not look grey after a season in the sun.

Cold water wax and comb

€12

Cold water wax and comb

A tin of soft wax for water between twelve and eighteen degrees, which is most of the year here, and the blue comb I have used since I started teaching. Wax on a cold morning is the difference between a good session and a frustrating one, and the tin means you are not leaving torn paper on the sand. The comb has a straight edge for scraping a board back to nothing and teeth for roughing up a base coat that has gone smooth.

The zinc I actually use

Reef-safe mineral zinc in a stick, so you can put it on with cold hands and it stays on through a two-hour session instead of running into your eyes. It goes on visibly white and stays visibly white, which everyone hates for about a week and then stops noticing. I do not make this and I do not sell it, but I get asked about it after every lesson so here it is.

Not mine, just what is in my pocket.

Where I buy it

Surf logbook

€16

Surf logbook

A small book for writing down what the tide was doing, which board you were on and whether it worked. It sounds like homework and it is the single thing that most improves people who have plateaued, because you stop guessing about conditions you have already surfed thirty times. Ninety spreads, one session each, with room at the back for the spots you want to get to. Flat cover so it writes on a knee.

Before you come

Bring a towel, water and something to eat afterwards, because you will be hungrier than you expect. Everything else I have in the van. If the forecast turns and the sea is not safe to teach in I will message you the evening before and move you, not cancel you. Parking above the beach is free before nine.
